Anyone use video to analyse their speech?

Do you regularly record video of your speeches? And if you do....how do you get the most out of analyzing that video?

Firstly, many congratulations on having the courage to watch yourself on video! It can be rather daunting.

Watching yourself is a great way to instantly see things that work well for you, as well as areas that you want to pay more attention to. I once read that the human brain is wired to learn much more quickly through watching an activity than just being told how to do it correctly.

Sometimes I find that the visual aspects of my speech is quite different than how I thought I was coming across to my audience!!

Hi Ash,

I used video for the first time in preparation for the speech contest this year. Like most things you do for the first time you question it a lot before you do it.

E.G.: Is this a bit geeky or weird? What can I really learn from this? Is it really worth the hassle: and so on..

Anyway the upside was that it was really a worthwhile exercise. I reckon I improved my body language, vocal variety and speaking rate esp. getting those important pauses right.

I will use it again, I guess about twice a year is the right balance.

The down side of it is the time involve but like most things if it's worth doing it's worth committing the time.

To get the full benefit I suggest.

1) Rehearse your Speech

2) Video your Speech.

3) Play it back and analyse making notes and comment to your speech..

4) Rework-Rewrite your speech based on what you noted.

5) Repeat 1 to 4

6) Repeat 1 to 4 .

7) Rehearse your Speech

8) Deliver your speech.

As I said it dose require time to do it right, but you do not have to do it all in the one session.

I plan on using this technique for a speech for our opening  meeting next September.

If you do use it I would be interested to hear how you got on,

Alan

Great suggestion Alan!

I will look to video my next speech to try this out.

Personally I will be taking a close look at my presence and speech projection.

Jimmy
