Leadership for the next decade - enter the debate!

posted by web forum, Premium MembershipWednesday, September 9th 2009 @ 12:14 AM

Hello Everyone, what do you think of our current leaders.  Are they meeting the challenges head on, are they being smart and innovative about the solutions. What are your thoughts....here are my notes on leadership for the current/next generation:

  • It takes a tremendous amount of courage to lead right now. The temptation is to 'manage the situation upwards' so that you secure your position in the organization and not lose your job, at almost any cost.
  • They need to excel in the areas of collaboration, listening and to set aside ego :-)
  • They must practise what they preach to maintain the greatest respect and integrity
  • Take a different look at some key business aspects.  For example:
    • outcomes not incomes
    • people not product
    • creativity not productivity

I think you are thinking the right way and currently America and Australia have leaders who are able to portray that they are working along those lines.  However tghey are still also considering their own future and not taking the full step but I would never expect a politition to take such a risk by doing the right thing all the time.  We should always remember that they are there for the short ride and the Public Service is there for the long term and they control more of what really does happen.  I feel that better leaders will be the thing of the future.

Great article James.

Leadership in the 21st Century is very challenging - certainly cannot play it safe - more emphasis on taking risks.

Keep up the good work!!

Regards

Justin
