#35 - What Makes a Good Website?

posted by Justin Barry, Group AdministratorFriday, October 2nd 2009 @ 2:18 PM

A good website design and layout for your club should bring in the punters!  The internet is very big world out there; According to Internet World Stats, there are currently 1,668,870,408 people using the internet!  Also, lets remember that everyone is surfing the web.  Don't take my word for it, this is what Bill Clinton was quoted as saying when he took US President office : 'When I took office, only high energy physicists had ever heard of what is called the Worldwide Web.... Now even my cat has its own page!'

So what are the important things to remember here:

  • Provide credible, original content in as many forms as possible.
  • Provide valuable, timely information to the user, not lots of data.
  • Share everything you learn
  • Custom-tailor the information to user preferences.
  • Be easy to read.
  • Be interactive; good interactivity engages the user and makes your site memorable.
  • Be well-organized
  • Fill a niche.
  • Dominate a subject area; become the  site for that subject.

Original content is so important to drive new visitors to the site.

I guess you also need to have a good mix of humor, factorial information so there is variety.
