BP's CEO Tony Hayward - should he go!?

posted by Justin Barry, Group AdministratorSunday, June 20th 2010 @ 10:32 AM

BP's CEO Tony Hayward

Tony Hayward has been in the public spotlight over the last couple of week's because of gross mishandling of the oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

Is this a fair assessment?

It is very difficult to judge because the public does not have all the information.

One surprising event was him stone walling the congressional hearings by not sharing his own views on what had happened.  I guess this was done for legal reasons otherwise BP could be liable for false statements.

Hi, there was public outcry because he was seen taking some time out over the weekend enjoying himself on a yacht!

This criticism is not fair because the guy has been focused on this problem for the last 6 weeks and I guess he needs a break!

Stella you are right.

Not all the facts are being reported. Who ran the rig, also the companies what provided the equipment.

I'm not excusing what happened but there is more to this than meets the eye.

Also, to expect an explination beforw a full investigation has taken place is unfair.

Lets see what happens next.

OF COURSE HE SHOULD GO!!!!  How can you defend a CEO who has personally made it his mission to destroy the entire Gulf of Mexico coastline and all the marine life that lies therein. Just the fact that he was personally overseeing the substandard quality and placement of the concrete around the well pipe is enough to have him fired.  Add to this the bribes to officials in charge of inspecting underwater rigs. He threatened legal action if the Obama administration in any way tried to enlist others to help with the cleanup.  He even shorted his own stock to make hundreds of millions of dollars when the price plummeted. I think he's probably responsible for the carpenter bees finding new homes in the wood on my front porch.

What?

Are you sure?

He did none of these things?

Well, that puts a different spin on things. When people are in a crisis, the people affected the most in the crisis are the people who think the least is being done to fix it.  Was BP's response to the oil leak in the first few days adequate? In hindsight, probably not.  Did he know how much oil was leaking? I don't know.  Who actually knew and was there intentional misleading about the scope of the problem? Possibly. Was the ANYTHING he could have done to stop the leak sooner? Apparently not, or it would have been done by now. I think the Obama administration is at much at fault for the resulting mess as BP.  They should have immediately called on and accepted help from ANYBODY IN THE WORLD who had equipment and knowledge about how to contain oil from an undersea spill.  But no, our (US) administration did what they do best. Point fingers and hold meetings. This is one of the most ineffectual administrations in my lifetime.  Unless you consider getting legislation passed that is clearly in opposition to what the people want.

Did Tony cover his ass? Maybe. But not as much as your going to see from Obama. If this guy is so horrible, how come nobody asked for his removal a year ago. 6 months ago. Or even 3 months ago?

Because people need a scapegoat.

I wouldn't wish his troubles on anybody.

Good luck, Tony. You're going to need it.
