Why is apple so successful!!

posted by Justin Barry, Group AdministratorFriday, June 25th 2010 @ 1:49 PM

The Mac, iPad, and iPhone have been hugely successful for Apple.

I would like your opinion as to why that is the case?

Apple is so successful because they have an attitude and culture that encourages employees to create, no dream, of products they themselves would like to see. Design doesn't address function issues until later in the creation process. Function doesn't worry about the design they have to fit everything into.  They each come up with the best they can and then they marry the two and come up with a product that is delightful to look at and use and still contains the best that Apple engineers could come up with for functionality. Have you heard about complaints that the iPad doesn't have memory card slots? I admit, this seems like something they could easily have included.  Many people say it is a deal breaker.  Hmmmmmm....it seems to me I heard the same kind of complaints several years ago when Apple excluded the 3.5" floppy drive from the early iMacs.  Now be honest.  When was the last time you used a floppy drive.  Is it just possible that Apple is blazing a trail through the wilderness, instead of wandering around the prairie looking for someone else's nook to slide into?  Sure Apple has it's fanboys.  It also has it's fanatical detractors.  These are the fringe elements.  Look to the mainstream if you want to judge how successful someone is.  And Apple is WILDLY successful.  It's all because of vision. That's the secret. Vision, and the fearlessness to tread where others will eventually follow.

It's hard to generalize, but I think Apple designers put themselves in the position of the end user and tries to create a product that they would like to use.  I think they also have a better sense of their users' capabilities than their competitors, who seem to constantly over and underestimate the public.

Finally, Apple has a better sense of pizzazz.

Interestingly, I understand Apple tends to eschew focus groups.

Perhaps they do take risks Stella, but to me, it seems that the risk is in the companies like Microsoft and others who either are afraid to venture to far out,or simply don't have the talent. Personally, I think its the lack of leadership.  With the pace that technology changes nowadays, I think it's a risk not to take a risk? Does that make sense?
