Haiti Disaster - Where is the leadership!

posted by LSF Guest, Premium MembershipTuesday, January 19th 2010 @ 11:20 AM

I cannot believe just how leaderless and chaotic the rescue and aid effort are for Haiti.

The key question is: Where is the leadership?

I know these are very challenging times for the International community, but surely aid still not reaching parts of the country when we are into the fifth day is not acceptable.

Here are my opinions on this:

  • There is no Haitian Government - It is astounding that the UN should state that Haiti is a “sovereign” nation and that, therefore, the Government of President René Préval is in charge of operations
  • It would appear that International aid effort is rudderless and mired in logistical chaos.
  • Myriad aid agencies are arriving by plane and by road but there is no central co-ordinating body to tell them what to do
  • The US military blocked supply planes from landing to make way for her arrival.
  • For distribution -- Newspaper had a quote from a co-ordinator that said “We don’t want to go out and distribute anything until we are sure we have enough for everyone,” he said. “We don’t want to give to some and not to others.”  In the meantime, Haitians are beginning to die of thirst and are without food and medicine!!

What are the leadership lessons learned here....
