#53 Leadership - Developing a vision

posted by LSF Guest, Premium MembershipWednesday, March 17th 2010 @ 9:08 PM

They say that a leader without a vision is no leader at all.  I would like to start with two quotes to set the context of this discussion:  “Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such….Henry Miller” and  “Anyone who limits her vision to memories of yesterday is already dead”…. Lily Langtry

Developing a clear vision is one of the critical success factors for a leader…why:

  • Leaders should be thinking about the future in terms of an exciting vision for the company.
  • They need to take time out because they should develop a clear picture of where they want the organization to be in 1,3,5 years from now.
  • They need to communicate this vision very clearly as they need to bring the staff on-board.  Simply put, they need to get buy in from their employees.
  • Revenue, ROI are important factors, but, your vision choice to "be the best in the business" is far more exciting. So please, think in these terms!
  • Remember to be patient and keep your cool as there will be disapointments along the way.  You must remind yourself that people are watching and you will be judged on how you react when the pressure is on!

Thank you for sharing this educational article John!

I think a leader also needs to learn patience as changes can sometimes be slow!

Hey John, thank you for a great article.

I love the opening quote which I 100% agree with.

I think leaders need to look very carefully at the implementation strategy as this should keep in mind the organization's capacity and capabilities for change.

Thanks for a nuanced article, John! Having heard a lot of (too many, frankly) "we need a vision" speeches, I am at the point where my immediate response is, no, we definitely don't need "a" vision. What we need is the right vision at the right time communicated in the right way to the right people for as long as it takes to get the vision realized. Your focus on the importance of the timing of the initial vision, the need for a clear articulation of the vision and the need for a thoughtful and viable long-term implementation of the vision of the vision are spot on.
