#82 - Transform yourself

posted by Justin Barry, Group AdministratorThursday, September 30th 2010 @ 12:37 AM

Being a leader does not mean you are the boss or require official recognition, and certainly not a specified background. In business, leadership simple requires YOU to stand up, assert your own authority on the situation and enable the team to achieve the target set.  How can someone who has not been anointed or appointed accomplish this?

---

Group's skillset

A leader needs to understand the various tasks needing to be accomplished to reach the goal, so they can ask: Who is best at what? Who would be most effective where? Its important to get the best person for the job otherwise you lose time and effort correcting this later.

Tread carefully

Stepping forward as the unofficial leader does not mean instant approval from the group. So subtly is your best friend in the beginning of the transition from mob to team. Often, a leader can be created in the other’s eyes by simply being the first one to say, “Ok, so what do we do first?' and take it from there.

Its where you are heading that is important!

You don’t have to come up with a plan or best course of action all by yourself. You just have to pick the right strategy to get your people there. Remember that it is not about you being a leader, but your team accomplishing their goal and you are but one part of that team.

Keep them motivated

Clear goals will help and always take the opportunity to celebrate small achievements along the way because there will be challenges ahead.

Final word!

Leading others should be an honor so it is not to be abused. Accomplishing the goal is the key point to being a leader. It is not about you, it’s about the team making things happen.

I am in the role of unofficial leader and have a couple of individuals on the team who are completely unmotivated. I've tried subtlety and praise; I've asked for their suggestions. They find every excuse not to become engaged or to excel. They seem passive-aggressive. Any additional ideas would be very welcome!

Hi Brenda.

Why not see if the group can persuade them to take action.  This can simply be the other team members stepping forward and leading on a particular task.  This enthusiasm may rub off on the people concerned.

Brenda,

Do you know the underling reason of their negative behavior. What is it they on't like? Ask them if they could change something a work, what is it and why? You might find out what the cause is and be able to address it.
