#96 Leadership Corner - Building Trust

posted by Justin Barry, Group AdministratorFriday, October 21st 2011 @ 12:00 AM

Every leader needs to be TRUSTED to achieve their goals and it must be remembered that it can take years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. George MacDonald is quoted to have said "To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved".  That is very true, protect your reputation and your trust, here are some recommendations.....

---

The duty of any leader is to inspire trust by character and competence. By character I mean your integrity, motive, and intent with people. By competence I mean your own capabilities, skills, results, and track record.

Lets face it, when you might think a person is sincere, even honest, you won't FULLY trust that person until they get results. And the opposite is true. A person might have great skills and talents and a good track record, but if he or she is not honest, you're not going to trust that person either.

A leader can set trust as an explicit objective. It must become like any other goal that is focused on, measured, and improved. One of the best ways to do this is to make an initial baseline measurement of organizational trust and then to take steps to improve this over time.

You see true transformation starts with building credibility within yourself. Here are some examples:

  • Communicate openly
  • Show loyalty
  • Get better
  • Confront reality
  • Clarify expectations
  • Listen first
  • Keep commitments
  • Deliver results

The best leaders recognize that trust impacts us ALL 24/7, 365 days a year. It changes the quality of every present moment, and that in every situation, nothing is as fast as the speed of trust.
