We want to inspire our audience. We want them to take action. We want them to respond with a strong emotion to our message and main purpose of our presentation. So how do we do that…..read on!
OK, you are reading on….so you do this by simply telling your audience stories that they understand and can make that connection with you.
There are a couple of things you need to remember when selecting and delivering your stories:
- Your stories need to be close to your listener's experiences – the more relevant the stories are to your audience’s experiences, background the bigger the impact is to them. If the audience are football supporters, I would recommend that your stories follow a football or sports theme.
- Put people at the centre of your stories and give these characters names – the audience likes to here about a hero or central character that gives makes them laugh and gives them hope!
- Appeal to the audience’s basic emotions – this is the best part. Your stories must appeal to the audience’s needs and some of these needs are
- The desire to succeed, be successful
- The desire to learn
- The desire to be honourable
- etc. etc
. - Your story needs to have a message and be making a clear moral point! – Why are people listening to you. Is it clear what your key message is?
- Deliver the story with a punch – use pauses, body language, vocal variety to maximise the effect of your presentation. Try and deliver your speech in a dramatic fashion.
So members, do you have any other ideas when presenting your stories to the audience.
