#72 What advice would you give to a young leader?

posted by Shane Barnes, Premium MembershipThursday, August 19th 2010 @ 8:57 PM    post viewed 3454 times

If you cast your minds back, you may just remember the days when you started down the management and leadership path.  When I look back, I was greatful for the advice people gave,  especially my mentors who made a great deal of difference to my career.  So here are some suggestions, but more importantly, what advice can you offer?

Shane's tips....

  • Be humble and respectful to others so you can develop your relationships with people and grow a strong network of supporters
  • Become self-aware, and to learn all you can about your strengths and weaknesses so you can develop yourseld and keep learning.
  • develop their active listening skills so they understand the message they are hearing from others
  • Empower your team and make them feel valued so they become a high performance team and deliver real results.
  • try things out and not to be afraid to make mistake as you will learn from this experience.
  • Lastly, enjoy the experience!

So, good luck members and guests on your journey as a leader!!

Regards

Shane Barnes

Nice selection Shane, my advice is to figure out what your customer needs as this will determine your success or failure.

Don't be afraid to hire people who are 'smarter' than you.

Lead by example as you can't expect others to do something you yourself won't do

I would ask a young leader to live by this quote by Don Miguel Ruiz: "Be impeccable with your word."

Keep lines of communication open with your customer facing employees. The attitudes and behavior of these employees can do more to influence your customers than a company vision, product roll-out or marketing plan.

Add to this list, have a positive message.  There are few things less persuasive than an "angry young man."
