#76 How to deliver the punch line!

Saturday, September 4th 2010 @ 12:01 AM

It sounds alot easier then it actually is!  The punch line gets its name from the delivery technique used. You must punch the line out a little harder and with a slightly different voice than the rest of the joke. So it is all about preparation and technique.  Interested?, then please read on.....

---

So what are the key things to do.....well, how about you lean towards the microphone and say your punch line/joke  louder and more clearly than you said in your speech.  You see, if the audience does not hear the punch line, they are not going to get the joke and laugh.

But thats not it, there is more.  You see, after you deliver your killer line, don't say or utter another sound. Give the audience a chance to laugh. Words or phrases appended to the climax spoil its affect and the result is that it tends to delay or impede laughter.

I know, it can be tough to wait because speakers trying this approach out for the first time tend to be afraid that no laughter will come, so they keep going.

Another key point is to deliver your punchline to one person.  It doesn't matter how large your audience is, you need to look one person right in the eye and deliver your line.  The person to whom you deliver the punch line to is a person I know is going to laugh. How do I know? I pay attention when I am speaking to them. For example, some audience members who are really in tune with what you are saying will nod their head gently in approval. You should have great success delivering to these people.

So these are only a handful of ideas that should kick start you.  So good luck members, deliver that PUNCHLINE!!

Great article Justin. One further suggestion is to deliver a physical response along with the punch line. For example, when you deliver the joke, your eyes/mouth is wide open!!

Remember, some of the most power body language techniques are facial expressions. So why not try it out.

one additional suggestion:

I would suggest that it’s not only what you say but also how you say that matters here, especially when you are trying to make people laugh. So, rehearse your jokes and double check that they blend well with your speech.

Hi, I guess you need to make sure the humor is funny to you. If you don’t laugh or smile at the cartoon, joke, pun, one-liner, story, or other forms of humor, then you certainly cannot expect an audience to do so. A key to using humor is only using humor that makes you laugh or smile.

Great advice thanks !!

Some suggestions would be:

- Your punch lines should reference things that the general public understands and finds funny.

- The story leading up to the punch line can be long, but the actual punch line should be quick and memorable.

Hope this helps.

Best, Barry

I agree with Tom about body language. Watch good stand up comedians, you can learn a lot about delivery, body language and punch lines!!!
