#75 Top Speeches - Martin Luther King "I have a dream"

posted by Shane Barnes, Premium MembershipWednesday, September 1st 2010 @ 12:18 PM    post viewed 445 times

Widely hailed as a masterpiece of public speaking!  "I Have a Dream" is the famous name given to the ten minute public speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., in which he called for racial equality and an end to discrimination. King's delivery of the speech on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement.

So what was the most repeated word.  It was not dream, is that surprising?

A great technique in getting his message across to the American people. The key message in the speech is that all people are created equal and, although not the case in America at the time, King felt it must be the case for the future. He argued passionately and powerfully.

Hi, thank you for sharing this famous speech. I really see this speech as a work of poetry, and a masterfully delivered and improvised sermon, bursting with biblical language and imagery. As well as rhythm and frequent repetition, alliteration is a hallmark device, used to bang home key points.

Great feedback and comments ALL!

So, for me, the most famous paragraph carries the theme “I have a dream” and the phrase is repeated constantly to hammer home King’s inspirational concepts. Great technique!!

Not just one of the best speeches, but one of the most important speeches in recent history.

When you listen to the delivery, it's the passion that gets the message across. No matter what language that speech was delivered in, you would have been moved.
